I agree with your opinion. PME currently fails to provide users with meaningful error messages for custom menus.
Additionally, I believed that measures should (and likely were) in place to prevent hard crashes like this one. However, based on your investigation, it seems those measures are not entirely effective.
This issue is definitely worth dedicating time and attention to. It is, in my view, at least as important as preparing for the releases of 4.3 or 4.4.
That said, I must apologize because I cannot promise a fix. To resolve this issue, I would need to approach it from the same perspective as roaoao, the original developer.
While I think this would be a rewarding task and something achievable with enough effort, I’m currently quite busy with my work, and it’s a bit exhausting.
